Artist Note
“Between the Lines” is a piece of visual experimental poetry, navigating the complexities of growing up and experiencing what it means to deal with rebellion, growth and self-expression. Growing up brown in a religious home, one is often subjugated to the absurdity of following very specific rules with very little wiggle room to grow. However, as one ages, a narrative shift can be seen here, and they begin to requisition things, unlearning and relearning, making mistakes continually. Being young, the process is never complete and may always remain a work in progress. Ultimately, the goal here is to move forward and to write your own story.
