Monks crossing the Punakha Suspension Bridge' Bhutan, Shobha Singh, 2024 and A single monk walking in Punakha Dzong, District in Bhutan, Shobha Singh, 2024

Concept Note:
I have always been an art and travel enthusiast. I especially love exploring historical places. These pictures were taken during my visit to Bhutan, depicting the community of monks in this beautiful country.

The monks live in monasteries or dzongs (fortresses), following a daily routine of prayer, meditation and religious study. Their lives are dedicated to spiritual growth, community service, and the preservation of their country’s rich Buddhist heritage.

Bhutan is a country that has held on to its history and culture, which continue to shape it profoundly even in contemporary times. Its people lead a life of simplicity, devotion and discipline, deeply rooted in the principles of Buddhism, even in a modernised world. This acceptance of the new world in tandem with history, which enables the country to work for the present and the future, inspires me not to forget my roots but instead to embrace them.

Bhutan feels like home because it taught me not to live life for the sake of surviving and instead choose to prioritise happiness, mental wellbeing, kindness and mindfulness over material wealth. I am sharing these photographs for the theme Families: Found and Otherwise, because they represent my personal connection with a different community discovered during my travel journey.
