Lurid Bombay EveningAaria Bharadwaj
- photography Artist’s NoteAs the shutter clasped on a lurid Bombay evening, I knew that the shot I had would not be understood by just any transient observer. Apart from the phantasy of the color and haughty contrast, this piece embodies a confluence of the elements that we don’t expect to see or feel comfortable seeing through our hollow subservient eyes. Two things that drew me to this picture - the disciplined symmetry and our chiral conditioned behaviors for the man that looks for his wrist, completely missing the letters beside him. He is complicit in his own ignorance and lack of attention. We are cocooned into the abyss of primal preregrinations of anxiety, sorrow, desire and comparison, that we forget to look around and pay real attention. That which is untainted by impression or analysis and that which abnegates the self in order to observe the true beauty of creation. This image, is also not what someone expects to hear when they think about the Mumbai local and that subversion from expectations is something I wanted to capture for my viewers, to cuss their comforts.
